ELECT MIKAELA, SHE'LL NIX INJUSTICE
By JEAN LEFFLER
We last witnessed Mikaela Nix run for office in 2018 in a bid for State House. A voice moderation, Nix lost in the primary to Stockton Reeves of Winter Park - whose race ultimately proved unsuccessful. No matter the office, both candidates deserve a second chance to use their skills toward public service. Nix may get an opportunity to do just that in a few short months.
Nix boasts of a long-time presence in Florida with family roots going back to 1887 when her ancestors owned a small farm near Gainesville, Florida. Her life truly defines the greatness of the American Dream even in spite of some of our nation's faults. An African American seeking a life of happiness following the Civil War, Nix's great (x5) grandfather chose the last name Hall, the only three letters he could write at the time. With only a few dollars, Hall founded a family built on faith and endowed them with a work ethic to propel them to success.
Today, Nix enjoys a career as a monumentally successful attorney in Orlando. Since her accession to the Florida Bar, Mikaela's record now boasts of over 60 bench trials. Her areas of practice extend far and wide, including criminal felony and misdemeanor cases. She has also authored successful appellate briefs and engaged in administrative hearings.
Protecting Civil Rights is very important to Mikaela and, as stated on her website, Nix's beliefs on fairness best embody Martin Luther King, Jr.'s on the subject when he stated that "injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere."
Equipped with these bedrock principles, Nix also feels that another cornerstone to any legal career lies with interpreting the text of the law as written and not for the Judge to act as a legislator.
Though our publications do not always agree on electoral matters, we strongly concur with the Orlando Sentinel in their endorsement of Mikaela Nix for Circuit Court Judge. A graduate of UCF and Florida A&M Law School, Nix lives with her husband and son in Orange County.
