GERALDINE DESERVES A NICE RETIREMENT
By MARSHALL SWANSON
Geraldine Thompson wants a black woman to be on the Florida Supreme Court, just not one she disagrees with politically. In reality, who cares what someone's skin color is so long as they do their best?! Well, as it turns out, most radicals on the far left, including Thompson disagree. But in today's identitarian culture, State Rep. Thompson's intersectionality agenda has collided head-on with her ideological underpinnings. Most people who have studied her recent campaign against Justice Renatha Francis agree that the Justice's qualifications unquestionably met the standards required for the position of Florida Supreme Court Justice. Moreover, as the first Afro-Caribbean American Judge on the Court, Francis' appointment would have made history. Nonetheless, Thompson issued a contrived and technical excuse for opposing this highly experienced legal mind.
After demanding a black woman be appointed to the Court to replace Peggy Quince, an outgoing justice, Thompson pushed on with her effort based in pure partisanship. In spite of Francis' robust legal abilities and expertise, Thompson felt her appointment to be a constitutional threat: “I put my hand on the Bible and raised my hand to God and said I would protect and defend the constitution,” Thompson told the Associated Press. Thompson's portrayal of the appointment as unethical seems hypocritical and bizarre for a member of the State Legislature whose personal charity resides in the same space as her government office (so much for the Sentinel). Instead of Gumming up the works and spewing demagoguery, Thompson should be focused on the needs of her constituents and advancing a diverse slate of appointees to the court system and state government.
Yet, time and time again, Thompson's do-nothing attitude seems to be stuck in the mold of political permafrost so often holding back career politicians. Our communities in Southwest Orange must find a new voice to represent the growing issues our state faces. Moreover, that new voice must possess the vitality and energy to advance our district forward within the Florida State Legislature. While Geraldine Thompson's lifetime in politics may seem an asset to some, most people feel she's grown stale to her constituent's wishes and point to her lack of results as the prime example of her incompetence. But what of Geraldine? We happen to feel that after a lifetime of public service, Thompson not only needs but deserves a nice retirement to focus on her personal charity, family and all the hobbies and interests she's sacrificed during her terms in office.
